Chapter 25

‘How are you going, Blaine?’ Eddie’s voice was thick with concern.

Blaine felt even weaker. ‘Do you think you should increase the dose? I feel worse than before.’ It was like imaginary binds were being woven around his body and pulled tighter with each microgram delivered.

There were murmurings amongst the medical attendants before Eddie responded. ‘Let us decide the dose, Dr Colton, but some of your vitals are dropping. Maybe we should stop until everything stabilises.’

‘Maybe I just need more.’

They discussed it further, before making a decision.

‘We’re going to give you another equivalent dose. If things don’t look any better, we stop. Okay?’

Blaine nodded. This had to work.

As they started delivering the next volume, Sophie and Kate barged through the door. Jennifer was directly behind them, a gun in hand. Everyone in the room drew back as one, like a human gasp.

‘Sophie?’ Blaine saw the look of terror on her face. What’s Jennifer doing?

‘Get back! And no one press the emergency button, or there’ll be trouble.’ Everyone did as Jennifer directed, including Sophie and Kate, whose hands rose into the air. ‘You’ve gotta stop the treatment now. It’s deadly.’

No one moved, so Jennifer went to where Blaine lay. She kept her gun raised to ensure everyone stayed back.

‘Get away from me, Jennifer.’

‘Blaine, there’s no time to argue.’ She lowered the handgun, placing it on the bed, and efficiently removed the i/v line from his arm.

At first he was too stunned to react as she gripped his wrist with one hand and pulled out the cannula with the other. I see being a former drug addict taught you some skills. He watched in disbelief as the line fell away and the life-saving treatment began dripping onto the floor. A flood of rage surged within him. And then Blaine noticed the gun next to his leg.

He snatched up the weapon and pushed Jennifer back as he moved off the bed. Unsteadily, he aimed the firearm at her head and blocked out the shock on her face.

Eddie and Sophie shouted simultaneously. The room tilted, making him feel so sick, their voices became muddled noise. He teetered about as he held the gun towards his birth mother, ignoring the screams of ‘no’ that echoed around him. All he recognised were the poisonous emotions coursing through him, and a delirious sense of power.

‘What? Not satisfied with being Kurt’s minion? Why didn’t you just take me out in the first place? It’s what you’ve always wanted.’

‘No, Blaine, that’s not true! He’s the one trying to kill you.’

Blaine’s mind spun with violent force. He toppled again, but managed to steady himself against the bed. ‘You’re always blaming someone else. You never wanted me. Just discarded me like trash. You’ve ruined my life, what was left of it. I hate you!’

‘Don’t do this, Blaine.’

Blaine heard Sophie’s words, but maintained his stance. His arm trembled with the effort of holding the gun away from his body. ‘You didn’t even try to stop him. You just sat by and watched him do whatever he wanted.
